State of Skate - Funding Breakdown

Ever wondered how skateboarding and the development and top league are supported?
We’ve put together a snapshot for those curious as to how funding comes in and where its from. Check out some of the below data to see the state of skate.

Categorised Funding

Below is the breakdown of where funding comes from for the Rumble and how much its supported.

  • This is without a doubt, a huge achievement by skateboarding.

It was only 5 years ago that majority of skateboard funding was via local government.

It’s great to see this change in such a short window to be a big contributor to supporting skateboarding.

  • That’s Right, Your local councils who build all the parks are great at supporting local events.

They are the second biggest contributor to making skateboarding competitions happen in Australia

  • The ASF is a member based organisation in skateboarding for coaches and organisers.

The ASF Auspices grants to assist the Rumble events and help grow skateboarding.

  • Only one state government supports the league, and thats the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland.

We would love to see state government support grow in future not just for the big events, but for the development leagues as well.

  • Skateboarding is still growing and we keep these costs low.

Entry fees are much smaller than other sports and this is not an area we expect to see growth in.

  • The development league, and the BMD Tour league receive no support at a federal level for skateboarding

  • Skate Australia is the recognised national sporting organisation for skate sports and skateboarding in Australia.

The Rumble Tour and Junior development competitions receive no financial support from the governing body.

Funding by State

This category is interesting to read. Considering that a large portion of revenue is sponsorship, it gives a good glimpse into which regions and businesses are more invested in sport.

  • Queensland councils have a strong support network for sport and it shows with Queenslands investment in skateboarding being much higher than other regions.

An interesting note here is that a lot of sponsorship comes from queensland, and these businesses also support other states to help them grow.

  • With a thriving skate scene, its no surprise it comes in second. Lots of events happen in SA, and local business gets behind it.

  • Not to be forgotten, while its a journey to the west, they get right behind skateboarding over there.

Its no surprise with all the amazing skateparks they have that skateboarding competitions and getting support and thriving.

  • NSW had it tough over COVID and its taking time to come back.

We think in time our biggest state will catch up with the rest as we come back to normal ways of life.

  • This is purely thanks to Apex Vacuum Solutions, who have presence in both TAS and SA, but get behind the BMD Rumble league nationally.

Did we mention they gave up a huge space in their SA office for a skate school to run lessons in.

  • This is due to some of the sponsors being victorian based organisations.

We would love to one day run a Rumble in Victoria

  • Not all is what it seems with this.

ACT has an epic event in the Belco Bowl Jam, and local programs with Canberra Skateboarding.

The NT has a range of challenges with its 2 major cities being miles apart, making it difficult to put events in and service the state.

Expenditure SNAPSHOT

We’ve taken some key elements with support from other sports to help up shape how funding is distributed.
Some of these elements include: using skater owned businesses as preferred suppliers and minimum prize money input. Since these implementations we are pleased to say that:
1. 72 cents in every dollar goes back to skateboarders.
2. Minimum prize money standards of a set amount, or a percentage of the revenue after expenses, whichever the greater.

These systems make sure as funding comes into skateboarding and the league, its being better distributed amongst the community.
